Educational Toys | Barnes & Noble Launches New Toy Departments

Barnes Noble stores are making room for kid stuff.

On Wednesday, the chain announced the creation of new 3,000 square-foot play spaces and toy boutiques in five test stores, including two, (Manchester and Enfield), in Connecticut. Departments feature hands-on displays, scientific and learning activities such as Nook eReader tables and an expanded selection of educational toys, books and puzzles.

The chain partnered with LEGO, Rokenbok, LeapFrog, Playmobil, American Girl, Crayola and other well-known toy makers to develop the areas.

While shoppers will find more toys, books and games in the retrofitted stores, they’ll find fewer CDs and DVDs.

“We’re investing in areas of our business that are exploding such as toys and games and re-examining areas of our business that are more mature and have slowed down such as music and DVDs,” said Jaime Carey, Chief Merchandising Officer for Barnes Noble in an e-mail.

In addition to the five mega boutiques, Barnes Noble has expanded its toys and games departments in stores nationwide. Stores will stock more than 2,000 products for children from infancy up to 12 years.

Mamamiow – I don't remember what “brand” it was. It came in a medium sized green flat box. I think they would be considered like a “generic” brand (I seem to recall the word “connections” in the title, but can't be sure). But I have looked high and low for a animal/habitat matching game in stores and online for printable ones and I never found one. When I found it at Walmart, I picked it up. I'm not fond of the fact that it's made in china, but it's one of the more popular educational toys we have. My now 4 year old still chooses it to play with.

Hi Bethany,I've been blog-stalking your blog for a while and I have to say that I'm completely impressed with Jaxon's geographical abilities. :) I'm totally feeling the same way about the educational toys for Hunter lately. I did a bunch of research on plastics a little while ago and I ended up putting a bunch of plasticky, noisy, and un-creative toys on a big lot and craigslist and have now opted for simpler toys that inspire imagination, knowledge, and creativity. We always have grandparents inquiring as to what to get the kids for christmas and birthdays, so to go along with this new toy movement I put a bunch of toys I liked on “The Things I Want”.com . Check it out if you want and let me know if you have any ideas. http://www.thethingsiwant.com/pencefamily

I don't always…usually I don't. I can't resist giving in other ways, though. I've made numerous deliveries of food to a food pantry & homeless shelters in the city, healthy snack food donations and literally carloads of books, educational toys, women's & kids clothing, baby items that I've personally collected to my favorite urban school and to the Center For Youth (serving economically disadvantaged children)…
I can tell exactly why that is: When I was in high school, my family traveled to Mexico City and while out for dinner one night, I spotted a girl through the front window who was begging. She was about 10-12 years old, by herself, huddled down on the sidewalk beggging…while I enjoyed a nice dinner inside. I may have had money in my pocket (don't remember that part), but I had food on the table and so I wrapped up some of my food, and on the way out, I handed it to her. She looked shocked, but gladly took it. I'll never forget that exchange. So that's what stuck with me.

I should probably carry spare dollars to share with the guys on the street, too. Adults get hungry. too. I've always focused on the kids.

I'd say AMEN to that, in the world of children's literacy development. The problem is that, not only do we have a lot of information (sometimes conflicting) but there's also a lot of misinformation. Go to the source to find accurate facts – in the case of literacy that's the International Reading Association and the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Harvard Family Resource Center — not the latest manufacturer of newest educational toys (after all, the latter has a vested financial investment in getting you to “buy in”).

I suggest love dice or maybe a sex boardgame or even a sexy secret santa outfit. But if you want to give her a toy a massage vibrator, it's not really about the size but on how much and how hard it could vibrate. Brands that are mainly and mostly recommended and popular are: Touch, Conair Massage

Hahaha! You're so cute it's ridiculous. Love the little button and thank you!! I'm usually a Scroogey type because my family is soooo not into decorating. Guys . . . They look at the tree and say, “What's wrong with just a tree? It doesn't need stuff on it.” Humbug. But, this year we've at least got lights up and I've found that it helps to get a couple of Salvation Army angels, so you can go back to buying bouncy balls and educational toys — and books! I choose kids who ask for books!!! There aren't many; but you can scope 'em out. The joy is back. I highly recommend it.

How about a Webkinz pet? Have you heard of them? They are a huge hit among the younger crowd. You purchase a plush animal, which becomes their pet, and you are given a code upon purchase that you use online to buy the pet food, treats, clothing, etc. I've heard it's a lot of fun for the kids and it instills responsibility.

Check out the entire selection of pets here, They aren't terribly expensive which is nice and would make a great gift for any boy or girl!

Hope this helps!
