Educational Toys | Fun Goes On At Columbus Public Library

By Brad Kruska

People assume that because the summer reading program is over thefun and excitement of the Columbus Public Library’s Children’sDepartment are finished; however, that is not the case.

During the school year, the youth division conducts outreach tonumerous schools and daycare facilities and also plans andfacilitates weekly Thursday morning and afternoon Story Time andStoryART sessions.

For years, libraries have offered story times as a way of enticingmothers and their children to the library to check out books.Stereotypically, little ones would come into a room, sitcross-legged on the floor and listen to a grandmotherly typelibrarian read two to three storybooks.

Let me be the first to tell you … things have changed. The reasonlibraries now offer story time is to provide them with an enrichingenvironment to come and interact with other children, have fun withtheir parents, be exposed to quality literature and to learn.

Children who attend story hours often become skilled at sharing, know how and when to sit and listen, and develop interests innonfiction subjects like insects, the solar system anddinosaurs.

The Columbus Public Library offers two forms of story hours: StoryTime and StoryART.

Story Time is very much what its name implies. Little ones meet inthe Children’s Room. Early arrivals have the chance to play the”Look and Find Game.” This activity permits them to search throughthe Children’s Room for a particular object. Once the item is foundparticipants come and tell me where it is hidden. This activityserves two purposes: 1.) to help children heighten theirvocabulary, and 2.) allows them a chance to expend energy beforethe storytelling begins.

The story times sessions usually begin at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.,depending on the time of day. At this time, little ones are invitedto come and sit on “The Magic Carpet” where they can sit on acloud, the sun or their favorite letter or color. Participants thenjoin me in an activity that prepares them to listen. Once thechildren are ready, the fun, poems, songs and storytellingbegin.

After the 30-minute story time is over, the children are invited tointeract with their parents using different educational toys foundin the “Learning Activity Chest” for one hour. The activities foundin the chest help children improve such skills as color/shaperecognition and counting.

StoryART, on the other hand, follows a similar format; however, instead of moving into “Learning Activity Time” after the readings, youngsters are guided down to the Columbus Art Gallery where thetalented Lisa Rosendahl and Susan Schoenhofer help them createamazing art projects. These crafts, which correlate with the day’stheme, are then displayed in the Children’s Room for two weeks andthen given to the youngsters to take home.

So, the next time you are looking for an entertaining andeducational program for your children, grandchildren or daycareattendees, be sure to come to the Columbus Public Library’sThursday Story Time/ART programs, which kick off Sept. 9.

Again, we offer two sessions, one 10:30 a.m.-noon; the other 1:30-3p.m., so no matter what your youngsters’ schedules are, there issure to be a story hour session available for them.

Hi Bethany,I've been blog-stalking your blog for a while and I have to say that I'm completely impressed with Jaxon's geographical abilities. :) I'm totally feeling the same way about the educational toys for Hunter lately. I did a bunch of research on plastics a little while ago and I ended up putting a bunch of plasticky, noisy, and un-creative toys on a big lot and craigslist and have now opted for simpler toys that inspire imagination, knowledge, and creativity. We always have grandparents inquiring as to what to get the kids for christmas and birthdays, so to go along with this new toy movement I put a bunch of toys I liked on “The Things I Want”.com . Check it out if you want and let me know if you have any ideas. http://www.thethingsiwant.com/pencefamily

When I was a baby/toddler I remember playing with dolls/stuffed animals. Most of them had stitched eyes and not the plastic ones you find on most dolls today.
I had a bunny, baby doll, stuffed dogs etc.

As a baby/toddler I also loved to hear little stories. I had a large book collection.

When my cousin was 1 year old he had some sesame street stacking cups, books, little stuffed toys.

Hope this helps a little. Don't worry, when they're two it will be so much easier to buy presents.

If she's going over the fence, you may want to look into installing coyote roller on the the top:

You can also create your own coyote roller with PVC pipe.

Hope this helps!
