Bible Object Lessons – Props To You!

Props to Me

Teaching adult lessons and Bible stories for kids have never been an easy task for me. I was known as the prop man. I was always dragging in boxes and bags of stuff to use in my Bible object lessons. Here’s something I learned over the years. Heck, just having the stuff sitting beside me still in the bags stirred interest and intrigue. What did he bring this week? When is he going to use it? Think of that… Bible object lessons are effective even if you haven’t actually used them yet! The props alone, still bagged, create interest and hold the attention of kids and even adults!

Be Like Jesus

The ultimate endorsement for visuals and Bible object lessons is THE Bible teacher, Jesus. He picked up rocks, seeds and other objects around him to relay the truth he was teaching. We can learn from this. Put into practice the same methods he used to make his teaching relevant and effective. Don’t just lecture your kids. Bring your Bible stories for kids to life using common objects. Just like Jesus, look around… what do you see that you could incorporate into your Bible story to increase kid’s understanding? Even better, dive into your kid’s world and find objects that your kids use every day. I’ve used backpacks, cell phones, video games, sports equipment, music, food, videos, pets and all kinds of crazy things that kids use and can relate to.

Props to You

Where do you start?

* Begin early in the week to prepare your lesson.

* Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to give you creative ideas.

* Read the Bible story for kids. Read it again and jot down any ideas for visuals you could use to clarify or bring the Bible lesson to life.

* Repeat this process over the next few days. The Bible story will sink deeper into your spirit each time. Meditate and muse on the Bible lesson. You’ll be amazed at what the Holy Spirit shows you as you move through your day!

The Missing Ingredient

I highly recommend you include Bible object lessons in every Bible story for kids you teach! It could be that key missing ingredient that turns your “okay” Bible story for kids into one that rocks! Yes, visuals are essential elements that create interest and hold kid’s attention… sometimes even when you don’t pull them out of the bag!
