Do Teachers Have Too Much Control ?

It has to soon be time that schools become more in touch with the communities which they serve. There needs to be a lot better interaction between the teachers and us parents than we have.

One of the main reasons this has happened to us is that the new headmaster in the middle school has not lived in the neighborhood for very long. People think differently in different areas.

He looks after the students as if they were still his troops because he is retired out of the army. It has become a habit for him.

A school can take discipline too far sometimes although I acknowledge that some is a necessity.

My boy John is getting bigger fast, like they almost all do, and we have to keep on purchasing brand new outfits for him. His ankles start showing below the trousers very fast. My husband’s clothes are likely to fit him soon.

There’s a childrens concert approaching at the conclusion of term and we got a note from the choirmaster stating that each of the boys of the choir must be dressed in black trousers and white shirts. If they didn’t agree, they would not be in the choir.

One extra bit of information in the note was that boys skinny jeans were acceptable as long as they were not too worn or too faded. That’s good.

However our PTA had, only a couple of years ago, done some fund raising and acquired a set of special robes for the choir to put on. However the new headmaster didn’t approve of them because it made all the boys look the same.

I found it funny really that he had spent so much time in army uniform just like his co-workers, yet he objected to this.

John did not appear to be worried because he put on a pair of my husband’s black skinny jeans that fitted him perfectly.

However, I thought that I wanted to take it a little further though so phoned the school. Clearly, quite a lot of other families were upset as well, as I took a long time trying to get through. The telephone was on overtime that day. I never got through.

My boy sorted out his dad’s black jeans and found a nice white shirt and looked very smart. Next day, he arrived home with another letter indicating that the robes were to be used in the choir. The demands of all the fathers and mothers on the phone had prompted the headmaster changing his mind.

A lot of the parent’s heartaches could have been avoided if only the teachers had decided whether it was to be black jeans or robes after discussing it with the parents to start with.
