Girls can be very different from boys in many things, and education is certainly one of them. Parents will often notice that girls seem a little more distracted or are delegated more to the background when they are studying with boys. However, studying in a co-ed school also does have its own benefits, like learning to socialize with boys. Some girls simply do better in an all-girls’ boarding school because of several reasons; some are socially awkward and easily distracted by boys, some don’t play well with the rowdiness that come with studying with boys, some just do better when they are around girls.

According to studies that are based on the statistics gathered by the National Center for Educational Statistics, there are further data suggesting that girls benefit more from being sent to boarding schools for girls. The data isn’t as conclusive with boys, indicating that they are somehow better off in a co-educational setting. With girls, the numbers certainly say something. They show that girls who come from girls boarding school have better academic performance than girls who come from co-ed schools.

In a boarding school for girls, students are not usually subject to sex stereotypes that oftentimes prevailin co-educational schools. Students also benefit from seeing strong female role models in the school system, getting the message across that when women are in charge, it is possible to make things run smoothly too. It’s not a matter of one-upping the other sex, it’s about knowing that girls can do it too. Because there are no boys who are aggressively competing for leadership roles, girls can finally step up and take leadership roles themselves. In girls boarding schools, they are given a lot of leadership opportunities where they can shine.

Another thing to consider is that girls have a different learning style from boys. While boys learn better with a lot of visual help, girls learn better by verbal communication. They get more out of a class where the teaching style is more verbal rather than visual. Studying in an all-girls school will enable them to learn through a teaching style that is planned out exactly for girls. It gives students more opportunities to excel academically

Unlike stereotypes that think of girls’ boarding schools as just finishing schools where girls are taught to be ladylike, prim and proper, the reality isn’t as restrictive. The truth is that most all-girls boarding schools also have a strong sports program, much like what could be expected in co-ed private boarding schools. Girls have varied interests too, and reputable girls boarding schools make it a point to have school programs that will enrich different interests. There are programs for performing and visual arts, equestrian training, and more. This helps create a better-rounded curriculum for students.

Boarding schools for girls also usually have a low student to teacher ratio, meaning that teachers will be able to focus more on students this way. Ensuring that even the quietest and most socially awkward girl will have a hard time blending to the background.

The only possible downside to girls schools is that they usually have a strict visitation policy. It’s best if you found out first what kind of visitation policy a school has before enrolling your daughter in it. If you’re not alright with that, there are other alternative schools that you may want to try.
