Once the initial apprehensions are overcome surrounding the boarding school concept, the experience can be highly advantageous for the student and parent, especially if the latter is often abroad or at sea. For example, many army personnel stationed in a foreign country find boarding an ideal solution to their situation.

As expected, the fees involved are significant, with a term’s tuition and lodging costing upwards of £7,000 in some cases. The prices vary depending on the school and the age of the child, and in some instances financial assistance is on hand to ease the cost.

However, price is not the only discouraging factor for most parents who opt for a state school education for their child. The lack of social freedom and potential buffering from external influences and experiences, while for many represents a benefit, does not appeal to every sensibility.

The argument for a better standard of teaching within boarding schools in comparison with other institutions derives from their ability to attract more experienced and highly qualified teaching staff with higher salary offers. However, not all teachers would aspire to make a career within the boarding set-up, with many relishing the challenges and stimulation offered by state schools.

Due to the prolonged proximity of students during term-time, advocates of this system emphasise the capacity for pupils to develop and maintain strong friendships with their classmates. As they are without family for the majority of the year, students will find reassurance and comfort in their network of close friends and living companions.

With a number of <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” target=”_blank” href=”http://www.glenalmondcollege.co.uk/”>boarding schools in Scotland</a>, England and Wales, parents need never be too far from their children, should they be required to visit the school or collect their children.

Though the prospect of sending one’s child to a boarding school may arouse feelings of apprehension, the benefits of such an education should not be dismissed. Though they will be without many home comforts, such omissions will be displaced by an activity filled curriculum, enjoyed alongside new friends.
