What is Needed to Teach Gardening in School

Here is a starter list of a few items you will need if you want to teach gardening in school.

#1. You will require supplies to get started including packs of seed, pots and potting soil, labels, peat moss, and water.

The exact items you will want to have on hand depends on what you plan to do as you teach gardening in school.

#2. There are a variety of supplies to have on hand to help to make plants grow. You will want to get some fertilizer for your student’s gardens. In some situations, seedlings provide a good starting point. If so, you should think about having some some stakes and string handy to help your plants grow tall during the early growth period.

#3. Compost is a helpful way to go about showing your students how to garden. You can show the students how to create their own compost as well from household trash. Even the things from the yard like leaves or lawn clippings can be part of it.

#4. There are all kinds of good hand tools that you can include in your teaching plan on gardening. Pruning shears are great for keeping your plants looking nice. You need to clean out the dead parts of your plants so that bacteria will not harm to the healthy growth areas.

#5. You can offer the students gloves, watering cans, and trowels to help with the planting process. Kids need to be able to be responsible for the watering schedule too so that they can see the growth it results in.

#6. Magazines and helpful literature provide additional instruction are great learning tools as well. When the kids begin see their plants begin to grow and produce, they will be excited to be an active part of the process.

These items do not have to cost a lot. Various greenhouses and retailers in the area may be willing to donate supplies. You can even invite local people who know a lot about gardening to come in and offer advice on successful planting methods during class.

Whatever your classroom furniture needs, you can find them at Teacher’s School Supply.

Sorry to get back to you so late – we don't get a lot of website traffic once the summer is over! Check out the main Learning Enterprises website for more information about the program. There is no program fee to participate, only cost of travel to the country, teaching supplies, and orientation costs. A more detailed budget sheet is available on the main website. Unfortunately, we don't offer scholarships, but we certainly encourage fundraising! Hope that answered some of your questions, and good luck with the application process if you're interested.

Every single member of Congress (including Republicans) are the result of America's "socialized" education system. Every single member of Congress (including Republicans) is the beneficiary of socialized medicine (taxpayers provide 100% of their care). ANYBODY who can't grasp that shouldn't be allowed to criticize the current proposals.

You are kidding us, right? Sanford does not support public education and has openly choosen not to do so when he decided to enroll his children in private schools. Vouchers are not the answer to public education. There is absolutly no emperical evidence to support the notion that vouchers will alleviate any of the current strain on the public education system, fiscal or otherwise. My fear is that rheatoric like yours may influence the small portion of the population that votes strictly on party lines, but I do feel the sensation of satisfaction knowing that it will not influence anyone else.

A seeing eye dog would be fine if you proved it and your need.

But mere companion animals as opposed to working animals are generally not permitted in No Pet Housing. They do NOT break the No Pet barrier.
You needed to plan ahead a bit more than you have done so.

>> Have you looked at the proposed budget for 07-08? Total Expenditures are $117MM, Total Education is $70MM. And $142K is now going to the superintendent, who was just voted a 3.5% raise by BOE. I don't know about you, but I don't make that kind of $$. And doubt many in Enfield do. And how much more of the budget is going to the unionized teachers and staff? The majority of the ed budget goes to salaries. Not to books, computers, not to classroom furniture or maintaining existing structures and fields. You'd need how many new 55+ units just to compensate for education salaries?? I say cut these salaries and find more industries to shoulder the tax burden. And vote out those on current BOE. Enough of this taxing the little guys to death.
