Financial Aid | College Scholarships – You Can Get Financial Aid To Help You Get A Degree

If you are single mother and you require financial aid, then reading this article is a right move. Since obtaining financial aid to help single mothers go to college is only an initial step, there are many more to make. You should decide what degree you would like to take so that you can determine where you will be in the future.

Once you have decided on what you want to study the the next step is to fill out an application form. If you are going to apply for financial help and you are on a low income you need to fill out an application for a pell grant through FAFSA. The procedure they use is straightforward and by using the online help available you can quickly determine exactly what aid you are eligible for. Keep in mind this grant is low income only.

If you are applying for a grant or scholarship there is no GPA requirement or credit scoring. Even though there is no GPA requirement for a grant or for some scholarships you need to be aware that you may still need a good score as far as your stats are concerned for some colleges, though many now, like yale for example, do not use your GPA to determine if you gain entry or not.

The other option available to you is to apply for a loan.

Student loans, unlike grants is money that has to be paid back. Once you take a loan you cannot avoid repaying it, just because you were not satisfied with the course or for any other reason.

One type of loan you can get is the FFEL or federal family education loan. These are loans that parents can get to help pay for their childrens education. There is another loan called the FFEL plus Which the students themselves can apply for. The advantage of these loans is that they are very low interest and can be used to pay all your fees. You can find information on this type of loan at “ed.gov/programs/ffel”.

If you are applying for a federal family education loan for your child or a plus loan for yourself then your credit score will be taken into account, so it is important that you have a good credit score before you apply. If your credit score is poor or you are on a low income it might be advisable to apply for a grant such as the pell grant, rather than applying for a loan.

Unlike with grants the money from a FFEL is paid directly to the college for your studies so if you are applying this way make sure the amount you get will cover all your schooling and expenses related to it.

If you do not want a loan you can apply for a scholarship or a grant to get you back to school and help you to get a degree and give you the education you want.

I think we agree that the rankings do not neccessarily reflect true academic quality and that more financial aid is always a good thing.

However, given the current state of finances we may have to make the tough choices between financial aid and affordability and academic quality. I think we also agree that there are ways to raise the money so that we don't have to make that choice, but if we did I think that is where we disagree. I look forward to reading your column tomorrow though.

Somewhere around 8.25 percent—but not sure. What you can do is take out your loans, usually 8 if you're in school for all four semesters. Get subsidized staffords if you can cuz the gov. pays the interest for you while you are in school. When you get out they will bombard you with offers to consolidate your loans whereby you can make one gigantic loan out of them all at usually a lower rate. Life will always include debt….so don't freak out. Just make your payments when the time comes so that it looks good for your credit score!
