Financial aid is normally defined as any money someone else gives or loans you to go to school. This can be in the form of scholarships, grants, loans, fellowships…. Some financial aid is based on financial need, such as grants that don't have to be paid back. Some financial aid are based on merit, such as scholarships that look at GPA and test scores. And some financial aid is based on a combination of both. Some is based on neither. I've also heard of the term, self-help financial aid- which is money that is loaned to to you pay back.
