Your x-employer is correct. There's nothing wrong with the certified letter; that just proves that they attempted to contact you regarding the account. If you do nothing, they may eventually just take the money although that is highly unlikely.

Go ask at the credit union how you can roll it over into an IRA. They will be glad to help you with that and you'll avoid penalties involved with cashing it out. If it's only $1,400 and you are unemployed, you won't be paying any tax on it anyhow and the 10% penalty would be $140.00 if you want to just take the money. Your income will probably not be enough (just unemployment and what you get if you don't roll over the 401k) that you shouldn't owe much (if any) income tax anyhow. If you do end up owing some income tax, look into the Hope Tax Credit for students. The new credit modifies the existing Hope Credit for tax years 2009 and 2010, making the Hope Credit available to a broader range of taxpayers. Many of those eligible will qualify for the maximum annual credit of $2,500 per student.

And you're not the only one who is jobless and broke today. So try not to think too much about it. At least you're back in school trying to better yourself to get a hopefully better job than the one you lost.

As I understand it, a lot of the people chosen to become astronauts have graduate degrees. If you were to go BS ME, then MS (or PhD) AE, you'd be in good shape.

When you did go on for your MS, you'd want to go to a very, very strong MS program.

You do not need a BS in AE to go to an MS AE program. Your BS in ME will work just fine.

If you do decide to go to Fairfield, don't go in planning to transfer. Go in planning to stay. If you find that FU doesn't suit you, only then do you transfer.

You seem to really like FU. It seems to fit you well. If it fits you well, you'll likely do very well there, and that's important re: your particular future goals. In addition, since it's free of tuition for you, you'll end up in far less debt, and have more choices re: future job options – more flexibility to perhaps take a job that doesn't pay as well, but gives you the perfect experience needed to build toward your career. It will also give you more ability to spend that money on interesting things as an undergrad, such as having the freedom not to work one summer or term, and instead do an internship with NASA.

If you feel it'll help you, you can go to the orientation at UC. But you really seem to have loved Fairfield. If you can find a way to make Fairfield work, going there would be a completely sane and rational decision.
