Financial Aid | Scholarships For Moms In 2010
Scholarships for Moms in 2010 are everywhere. Do you know where to get this money? Learn how to get more financial aid this year.
It is a difficult task to raise children. Working around their schedules, spending time with them, and raising them right takes a substantial amount of time and energy. When the workload of a career gets added to the picture, time becomes even more of a precious commodity. At a time when divorce rates are higher than ever, there is the further possibility that a mother may be shouldering these burdens alone. All of which makes the possibility of furthering her education seem like an impossible goal to accomplish. A college education can further an individual’s career, enriching her knowledge and making life easier for her and her family. It may be tempting to postpone such a decision, but with the rising rates of tuition, there is no time like the present to pursue higher education. Luckily for anybody attempting to return to school, there is a wide variety of scholarships for moms available to any woman who wants to pursue them.
The internet is a great resource for tracking down scholarship possibilities and school curricula specifically tailored to the needs of a working mother. With a few entries into a search engine, anybody can find educational opportunities which can support their lifestyle and scheduling requirements. Because many women are making the same decision to further their education, a substantial number of internet resources exist to direct potential students in the right direction and to offer support and information once they do pursue the university path. It can be worthwhile to speak with specific universities directly as well. Many offer night classes or classes online, both of which can suit the scheduling needs of a working parent. The admissions and financial aid departments of universities can direct a potential student towards scholarships and grants designed for working parents and can help ease the financial burden of a continued education.
Pursuing higher education might seem like a big step to take. Between raising children and supporting them through work, many mothers might not feel like they have the time, the energy, or the financial resources to go back to school. It can be a daunting prospect, but a working mother attaining a university degree can ensure a degree of success, financial security, and inspiration to her children which might be difficult to otherwise attain. With the help of scholarships for moms, these possibilities are more readily available than ever, and are waiting for potential students to take the first step.

Private schools are actually getting much more accessible to the lower classes. Many boarding schools are need-blind now, meaning that financial aid does not affect admittance. There are a lot more students on financial aid which is making these schools more diverse every year. For example, my former school, the Lawrenceville School, has about 40% of students receiving some sort of financial aid. This is a dramatic increase from previous generations.
Another aspect of the lack of racial diversity is the applicants. The majority of students at private schools are white because the majority of applicants are as well. Families often have a tradition of sending their children to the same boarding schools or private schools. I believe that many minority families do not apply to private schools because they do not know about the changes going on in them. If they knew about the increased financial aid rates, more would definitely apply.

The great, GREAT majority of college scholarships are provided directly by colleges themselves to their incoming freshmen. The percentage of scholarship money awarded every year through "independently researched scholarships/loans" is in the single digits – probably the low single digits – and none of those scholarships are represented in the College Board profiles. Those are "institutional awards" only (from that particular college). There are only a handful of grant programs for higher ed from the Federal government, so most Federal aid is either work-study or subsidized loans (no interest accumulates while you're in school).
Be very careful if you're using those College Board numbers to compare the affordability of schools. I get the feeling that the way that data is reported to CB is interpreted in different ways by different colleges. They won't necessarily be "apples to apples" comparisons.

Google "Work-Study" and "Apprenticeship Programs" or go here
and look at the bottom of Best Answer for some really good urls.
Many of these or urls for them have already been listed in Yahoo Answers, I did a good one listed above.
If you are poor or lower middle class economically, student loans are something to stay away from insofar as possible. Be realistic, you will have to make your own way. No one is going to give you a posh job, it will go to someone else with connections, even if they are stupid. Gals can get some good jobs if they are good looking, but be careful — those who are not end up in some industry they wish they weren't or worse.
Always ask the advice of women in their late 30's, early 40's who have a career you like. Free advice for those humble and wise enough to ask can save one from some terrible pitfalls or pratfalls.
*If you ask this question again, specify your interests and home state for better info from those who may be able to help.
If you do not mention those, we don't know whether to mention the Coast Guard, we might leave out the perfect paid apprenticeship or free schooling program like I am probably doing now.
Many states are begging for nurses so there is big financial aid in that area.
Recommendation: Pick something you like and work your butt off per the above, seeking some advice from time to time. Step by step one goes a long way, even to the Center of All Reality one day in the distant future.
