I used the ethnographic research method of interviewing to find out the everyday experiences and effects of the economic recession on five workers at the UCSB Financial Aid Office. After interviewing them, it became clear that the newly instituted furlough days, increased work hours, and decreased wages (based on a finance-based “sliding scale”) have impacted their work routines the most. Unlike my initial predictions, I found that there has not been a drastic increase in the amount of calls the financial aid office receives regarding concern over the costs of tuition and fees, nor have there been layoffs in the financial aid department. Ultimately, I found that the anthropological concepts of change, behavior, social norms, values, adaptation, reciprocity, and neoclassical and political economies emphasized some of the negative (as well as constructive) effects of the economic recession on this selected population from the UCSB Financial Aid Office.

Colleges have their own private scholarships, as well as the scholarships from the state and federal government and the loans the federal government offers.

The article says that, “tuiton increases are actua;;y a good idea- as long as they're matched with financial aid, including scholarships, for poor students.” I do believe that UC tuiton is good if this statement were true, but what I find hard to believe that students are not matched up with financial aid or scholarships. Through my experience it seems that students have to find financial aid and scholarships themselves. What if those students don't know about financial aid nor scholarships?
Ever since I was in high school I've always had a hard time finding scholarships, especially ones where I would feel confident in winning. As for financial aid, my family would never qualify. I'm sure I'm not the only student who has the same problem. While in that situation how does UC tuiton rising become a good thing?

oh but they do exist. believe you me, i have spoken to the legendary oompa loompa. but before that was possible, i had to journey through the forest of fuhreekinassredtape. and then i had a spell put on me that made me sleep for 3 hours. and then i finally woke up to the voice of the oompa loompa. …the financial aid office is terribly understaffed, and there are millions of students who want to talk to them regarding their financial aid. there's a line at the financial aid office everyday. that's just life. waiting waiting waiting.

I think the phrase “My financial aid dept sucks!” is a collective saying among college students. I know my financial aid department HATED me because they were really quick to hold up my registering over a dollar (YES a DOLLAR!) but when they owed me 300 bucks they gave me the run around. Everytime I'd go into that office Id rip someone a new one. Good luck! Hopefully your financial aid dept wont be as awful as mine was!

I have an Afro-Asian child who is eligible for APP at Seattle Public School. However, she is not able to get into the program because it's full. I am exploring the private school option for 2010-2011 school year for her. Is there any private schools that would give 100% financial aid/scholarship to families in need? When I checked school websites, they don't usually say what percentage financial aid covers for needy families. I appreciate your input.

I work for the student loan program and I know each school is allowed to process their loans at their own discretion. In general most school will disburse your loan every year into 2 disbursements throughout the school year (one in the beginning and one toward the middle of the year. After your Cost of Attendance is paid (tuition, books, ect…) you are left with your student refund so bottom line you probably will get 2 student refund checks a year. But your best bet is to call your Financial Aid Office at your school and get the answer from them directly.
The grants work the same when it comes to disbursements, we also work with the Pell Grants at my job
and I have gotten Tap myself as a student and they gave it to me in 2 seperate disbursements at the school I went to "Medaille"

Ouch, sounds like a tough situation!
I guess your husband's income is being counted in the FAFSA calculations so there won't be any federal assistance.
Several of my friends got started at local community colleges and transferred over to public universities after two years – they saved a lot of money and still got a good education & good jobs afterward.
The best bet is to keep costs as low as possible and find scholarships that match your individual eligibility:
There are definitely scholarships for students who are returning to school after a break, and scholarships for just about every major you can think of or club you might belong to. Its good that you filled out a FAFSA, but now get ready to apply for a dozen or more scholarships – aim for the local ones and ones with more eligibility criteria that you match – they'll have the least competition.
Every little bit helps too, so don't discount the $500 here or $1,000 there you might be able to apply for.

Find out which one of the reasons you were not in compliance with. Speak with your FA counselor.
Maybe they don't count your "cumulative" GPA, but note if *any* of your individual classes fell below a certain grade.

Hello
I would recommend you to post this question again it in the psychology section in the social science caregory of Yahoo answers. They would answer it there better there. You've posted it here, on the computers and internet category of Yahoo answers…
But for me, asking them won't be a problem. Have a sincere talk with them, just like an open forum..
