Question by Wyatt’s mama: What are some good educational, age appropriate but inexpensive toys for a 12 month old boy?
Wyatt’s birthday is soon approaching (well 2 months) and he needs some toys that will make him think. He no longer plays with the toys he has, he would rather try to stack bowls, try to get things to fit together or something else somewhat challenging for a 10 month old. So what are some good toys that would keep him “thinking” and that would have a bit of challenge to it?

Playing should not be merely a routine work, but should exude some knowledge and learning that can enable a child to mould his or her personality in different fields like emotional, physical and social.
Toys at Different Stage
A child educational toy should be brightly colorful and have the ability to entice and draw the attention of a child. Red, white and black are the first noticeable colors in the eyes of infants. The eye-catching hues help the child to get drawn towards the toys and get a hold of it. The various aspects of the child educational toys stimulate the sensory organs and stir interest amongst the infants who can hardly understand anything.
The infancy stager of a child is characterized by inquisitiveness. But once they grow up they can solve their queries by asking many questions. With the passing of years, the maturation of their body parts contributes a lot to the development of the motor skills. The varied types of toys like the building blocks, puzzles, stuffed toys, reading and coloring books, arts and crafts material helps a lot to boost a child’s’ imagination capability and creativity.
When a child steps into a school, he or she is open to a lot of obscure faces. Gradually the child learns to interact and play with his or her classmates and teachers. When the child grows a little the surrounding atmosphere becomes very amicable and a lot more casual. At this stage the various child educational toys are useful and enable them to enhance their educational skills. Games like balls, skipping ropes, board games and playing cards hone their skills and teach them a lot.
About Educational Toys
Good bonding with your child is very essential as it can drive away their shyness and aid them to win their fears. Nowadays most of the parents are working and can hardly squeeze out time for their children. Therefore, they try to compensate their prolonged absence by gifting toys. Hence the demand for educational toys has escalated in the recent years. The manufacturers have taken great pain and labor in researching and understanding the child’s psychology and creating toys that will accomplish their demands.
A few examples of child’s educational toys incorporate math basics, geography and variety of games that enhance the analytical skills, kids spelling and many more. In the recent years demand of the educational toys has amplified because children now prefer those toys with which they can actively interact than the usual stuffed toys.
Play is not merely a passing of time but plays a pivotal role in improving a child’s emotional and learning capability. Playing enables to widen a child’s capacity and maximize his potentiality. Remember that different child have different development pace and hence should be tackled differently. Do not force your thoughts on your child. A child may love to play with the same toy day after day. But another child may quickly lose interest in a particular toy after some time. You should understand this difference and meet their demands accordingly.
Once equipped with a child educational toy, your child is open to a myriad of activities, which makes the game more interesting. Hasbrow’s Baby Einstein Company is recently creating waves in this arena. Besides, playing with the toys encourage the children to learn music, art, language and poetry.
To name a few interesting toys the Leapfrog’s Fridge Phonics Magnetic Letter Set, the Fisher Price’s Laugh and Learn Home and Leapfrog LeapStart learning Table are very educative and lots of entertaining.
Hence, there is a variety of choice for your child but you should buy something, which is quite apt for your child.

It is the day and age of television and video games. Children are turned to zombies as parents think that these are good ways of keeping their children busy. Parents are overlooking the disadvantages of TV and home video games and are forgetting the benefits of the good old trust children’s educational toys. TV and video games are good, but only if the children are sure to be watching or playing educational material. In this case it is still safe and better to turn to good children’s educational toys widely available in the market.
The make of children’s educational toys have become competitive these days so parents are sure that these items are effective in keeping well-behaved kids, simply whiling away their time while having fun and learning. Parents are also assured that their children are growing up the way they should be – with sharp minds at an early age, which would save them from future possibilities for brain and memory diseases like Alzheimer’s or dementia.
Children’s educational toys help kid’s minds to develop to their full potentials – stimulating the senses, developing gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination, logic, social skills and even language skills. Without educational toys, most children at school would probably be slow learners. It is then best to keep children’s minds’ active with educational toys.
Keeping a set of educational toys for your children is not so difficult. Choosing would not be a challenge since there are a lot of good toys out there. It could be as simple as a puppet, simple but good at keeping your child’s imagination working. The added fun speeds up the process of learning.
There are also toys that are clinically tested. Colorfulness and ingenuity in these toys keep the playing activity interesting while obliging your kid’s to think. Children learn trial and error and practice coordination and strategy with matching shapes for instance, as early as childhood. Problem solving skills and decision making is also developed. This is a head start in childhood development. All kinds of play are good as some people would contend (It is informal education). But each activity has a different effect on development – free play, repetitive play, constructive play, make-believe play, environment-imitative play, group play, solitary play. It is best to pick the most learning effective toys out there.
Learning is also best started in childhood (the earlier the better) as it is a time of rapid physical, mental, emotional, and social growth. The child has a natural thirst for discovery and learning. He is inquisitive and curious. Give him a building block and he will know what to do with it. It is fun to watch how your child learns to connect with the environment he is in. It will play a huge part in shaping his personality and maturity in the future to come.
Educational toys are just the right tools for fun and learning. Yet what makes playing with children’s educational toys more worthwhile is when parents are involved in the play, boosting the child’s confidence and esteem with praises and proper guidance. Remember that toys are not only good at babysitting your child when you are busy; it is also a good material for parent and child bonding. Educational toys foster quality time. It feels rewarding. So make sure you are there the next time your child picks up a toy. Learn and have fun with him.
I’ve got my child all the toys he needs to aid his development. I’ve got the flash cards, the magnetic letters and numbers, even the foam numbers for the bath. I’ve travelled to all the specialist shops, placed orders for that obscure toy that is made by one armed under privileged children from the remnants of a rainforest. I’ve spent his child trust fund several times over on the latest educational toy that aids his development. All these educational toys are great, but what about fun toys? Toys that do absolutely nothing but make your children happy whilst teaching them nothing else.
When my son is running around like a loony with a bucket on his head I often wonder what educational value there is in the bucket? What is he learning?
When I was a child anything that required batteries was a no-go. Anything that had an ‘educational’ value was unaffordable. We made do with second hand dolls, dolls prams and such like. In fact, my favourite toys were Weebles, and you know what I did with them? I stuffed them in my socks to make shoes with high heels! Never did me any harm, well apart from the mis-shapen feet.
Manufacturers have found a new market – the parent who wants to give their child a head start prior to starting school. Today’s toys are all flashing lights with an American voice over. We are all drawn in by the lights and cheesy American voice that says “that answer is incorrect, please try again.” We’ve convinced ourselves that this is educational fun when in reality the lights and noises are just a distraction.
Most parents these days are in a rush to spend the most amount of money on the biggest ‘all singing all dancing’ educational toy that requires a share in Duracell just to power it up. We should be going back to the simple toys, toys that encourage activity and imagination. Our children’s education is all around us, in the world outside the front door. Give your child a stick and see what he does with it. Ask him what it is. If he says “it’s a stick”, then of course he has given you an educated answer. If he says “it’s a snake”, then this child has developed a great imagination that will serve him well throughout his life.
Toys that encourage children to have fun whilst running around like loonies will hold their attention a lot longer and have many more benefits than any educational toy.I’d like parents to consider whether this toy will get their child moving, get them outdoors having fun or whether it will encourage them to become a couch potato.
Let us put aside our ideas that all toys should have an educational value and go back to the simple toys. Toys that are just fun. Let our kids be kids for a while longer.

Question by Cosette: What are some educational computer games for teenaged students?
I remember playing numerous fun and educational computer games during my elementary school years. (Oregon Trail, Zoombinis Logical Journey, and Carmen Sandiego are just a few examples of many). Are there any computer games with educational value aimed toward high-schoolers?
It is often said that the first eight years of a child’s life play a critical role in shaping the person they will later become. Whether done deliberately or not, education for a child starts right after birth. By far the most important method that a child learns from in their early years is observation.
It is from what babies see that they are able to relate words to objects, actions and descriptions. It is for this reason that educational toys for babies can serve as an important tool in helping the baby grow in knowledge and sharpen their skills.
Often, parents, guardians, teachers, nannies and other persons that have children in their care underestimate the important role that toys can serve and the deliberate thought that should go into the purchase of one. Generally, all toys are fun. However, not all toys are educational. Educational toys for babies are a great way of imparting knowledge using a fun and exciting method.
There are different categories of educational toys that one can choose from. The first category are the art and craft toys. These include crayons, painting sets and plasticine. It is a great way of stimulating the child’s creativity as well as an appreciation of colors. The child can, quite early start to appreciate their ability and power to transfer an idea in their mind into something visible and tangible.
Art and craft toys are also an effective way of building confidence and encouraging self-expression. Whatever they make from the arts and craft toys, the babies must be encouraged no matter how imperfect what they have constructed might appear to be, to continue doing so.
The next category of educational toys are construction sets. These are boiling blocks made from plastic or other light material allowing the baby to come with a structure of their choosing. The skills developed here are a lot similar to those gained from art and craft toys. In addition, the child starts to appreciate the significance of balance and the basics of physics laws. It also hones their muscle coordination.
Then there are dolls and role-play toys. Examples include Barbie dolls, toy soldiers and stuffed teddy bears. The baby figuratively brings the toys to life. As they play with these toys, they are forced to think through how the toys will relate to each other and is often based on their observation of real life interaction between adults and older children. In fact, role-play toys are an important tool for adults to see into the child’s perception of different aspects of life. Any misconceptions can then be identified and corrected appropriately.
The fourth category of educational toys for babies is electronic ones. These toys are usually powered by batteries. Battery powered toy cars are a good example. However, there are role-play toys such as dolls and toy soldiers, that be classified as electronic toys as well if they are battery powered. Electronic toys help with exercising eye and hand movement.
