How To Choose A Great Paramedic School

Introduction: For individuals who want a fantastic career in EMS as a Paramedic, picking a suitable paramedic school is the first step in the direction of a fantastic job. Great teaching facilities with in house medical equipment, good faculty, and certification by state government are good standards, which an excellent paramedic education should fulfill.

Fundamental Requirements: Paramedic training will be either available at local community colleges or by individual, specialized schools. Interested individuals should first get hold of a list of all state-accredited paramedic schools and compare each of the schools and programs based on conditions like the school’s reputation, educating methodology, course structure as well as lab features. A good paramedic school is one that trains its students extensively on medical terminology and principles, assessment and therapy skills as well as prepares them to pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) assessment.

Personal Preferences: Personal preferences are essential when deciding upon the school. Prior to selecting a training program you ought to consider and choose based on his/her work schedule, household obligations, and personal preferences which in turn will later determine good results. Based on personal preference one can also choose an online course or a hybrid program. You should decide if you want a college degree or just require state-approved education to become eligible to take state and national exams.

School and Program Design: A great paramedic school provides a variety of training equipment, including emergency room equipment, ambulance equipment and also mannequins. A good school also offers ample time and opportunities to work with equipment and its classes are modest and well-organized which in turn makes education an enriching experience. It is equally important that a good paramedic institution aids students with using high quality paramedic study guides to make sure successful completion on the NREMT exam.

On the job training or internships are an essential a part of every paramedic course, for that reason prospective students need to find if the institution to which they are going to apply organizes internships at reputable hospitals or ambulance providers. Internship instruction prepares students to cope with real-time stress filled conditions that are a part of a paramedics work.

It is always important to practice good study habits and make use of a complete NREMT Study Guide. A combination of a good paramedic school, a good paramedic study guide as well as a couple NREMT practice exams will give you best chance at successfully finishing your training.

I remember well an early EFL class, teaching English to young learners:
As I remonstrated with little Pedro – his real name incidentally. (He’s either a politician or master criminal now) to please not drop my bag which he was gleefully dangling out of the 3rd floor window, I did find myself pondering, how did it get to this? In other words what could I have done to prevent this sorry state of affairs?

When it comes to classroom discipline, I’ve learned some lessons over the years and have established 5 golden rules for myself which I’m happy to share:

Rule 1.

Know your class. If they are boisterous from the off, you need to be there before them, early with a heads-down task ready on their desk to focus them as soon as they enter. It can be light; a simple word puzzle or even let them unscramble some words on the board to find out the theme for the lesson. Whatever it is, it needs to be quiet and individual.

Rule 2.
Silence is golden. Instead of raising your voice, why not be quiet when you need some hush and raise your hands in the air. Tell them from the off that this is the sign to be quiet and copy you. Say nothing, but when all hands are in the air, begin again. This can really work and although you might think you’ll be there forever waving your hands in the air like some stranded swimmer, you’ll be surprised how many of the students nudge each other to copy if they’ve missed the cue.

Rule 3.

Agree and establish the rules with your students early on. For older students ask which tasks they find fun and agree to include them as a reward towards the end of a class when they have behaved well. Reach a consensus with them on acceptable modes of behaviour and use of English in the classroom.  For younger students, reward/sticker charts work really well with a small prize at the end of the week/term for hard work. Be sonsistent in this and be sure to reward good behaviour only.

Rule 4.
Make learning as fun as possible. Boredom often results in poor behaviour

Break up longer tasks with a ‘breakout’ 2 minute class activity such as aerobics, Simon says or a chant.
Include communication games regularly. There’s some great ones here: http://www.mes-english.com/games.php

Rule 5.
Look at your own classroom management behaviour and remember that body language speaks louder than words.
Smile and talk to the whole class. The newbie teacher’s tendency is to talk ‘to the board’ or that 1 friendly face in the crowd as it’s easier than facing a sea of bored teenage faces. This won’t do.

Keep your hands out of your pocket and stand up. This immediately gives you authority. There’s time for you to be their class friend once you’ve established the rules of engagement!

Say it like you mean it, so: ‘we’re doing this today…’ rather than ‘I thought we’d do this um and um hope you like it’. Force a smile, sound enthusiastic and adopt a louder ‘whole class’ version of your real voice. Remember, there’s no point speaking if you haven’t got their attention. See rule 2

Break down instructions into manageable chunks. How many times has poor attention been the result of the student not really understanding what they have to do? This can mean ensuring they’ve got each segment of instruction before moving onto the next chunk. E.g:

‘First, stand up.’ (Everyone obeys.) ‘Next, face the wall.’ (Everyone faces the wall.)

‘I’m now giving each of  you a piece of paper with a famous person on it.’ (Give out the piece of paper.)
‘Now, open the piece of paper. This person is now you. Keep your new identity secret.’ etc.

This works far better than giving the instruction in one ‘download’ since you can make sure everyone is with you at each stage. Have a look at how I break down instructions in our Global English teaching video: a getting to know you activity

Rule 5b.
Yes, I cheated with an extra rule.
Ensure you isolate trouble makers – but avoid stand-offs. There’s always 1 Pedro. (I should really let this go, shouldn’t I?) Faced with 1 or 2 who are getting the whole class giggling with their flagrant flouting of your instructions, the best thing is not to engage in a battle of wills. They have a captive audience of their peers to play up to and have little to lose in most cases. EFL teachers have fewer sanctions up their sleeve than regular teachers and kids know this.

Get the class quickly involved in some work. This means your troublemaker has lost their audience. Then quietly approach said trouble maker and stoop to his/her eye level. Ask something neutral like:
‘Do you need help with this task or can you go on alone?

Avoid stand-offs…‘Sit down Pedro! (Pedro refuses.) Louder: ‘Sit down Pedro!’ (Pedro doesn’t budge.)
Rather: ‘Pedro, when you’ve sat sown, let’s begin at page 4.’

Of course, ignore all the above advice if their behaviour is dangerous – if little Pedro is dangling little Angelina out of the window instead of a bag, for example. In which case, do what you have to and good luck!

Financial Aid | Student Loans, Financial Aid Both Rise In 2009″10

The College Board, in its annual “Trends in Student Aid” report, estimates that a total of $154.5 billion in student financial aid was distributed in 2009″10. Grants now comprise about 50 percent of student financial aid from all sources, both federal and private sector.

In 2009″10, the average undergraduate student financial aid package was worth nearly $11,500. This figure includes more than $6,000 in grants and more than $4,800 in government-backed federal student loans. Graduate students received slightly more financial assistance, on average, in the form of grants” nearly $6,400″ but also borrowed more heavily. The average graduate student took out more than $15,700 in graduate student loans.

Grants

Compared to student financial aid figures for 2008″09, grant aid to undergraduate students increased by 22percent, while federal student loans increased by 9percent. The 2009″10 academic year also saw a 16-percent increase in the average federal Pell Grant award to $3,656, the largest one-year rise in the program’s history. Only about one-fourth of all Pell Grant recipients, however, qualified for the maximum grant amount of $5,350.

Student Loans

Private student loans ” college loans issued by private lenders rather than by the federal government” represented about 8percent of all student loans in 2009″10, a decrease from 25percent in 2006″07.

Federal subsidized Stafford student loans made up about 35percent of all student loans in 2009″10, an increase from 31percent in 2006″07. Unsubsidized federal Stafford student loans accounted for 42percent of the combined federal and private student loans taken out in 2009″10, an increase of about 12percent from 2006″07.

Subsidized Stafford loans, which are available only to students who demonstrate financial need, are government-backed college loans on which the government will pay the interest while the student is in school or in a period of approved deferred payments. Unsubsidized Stafford loans are available to students regardless of financial need. Although students, as on a subsidized loan, may defer payments on a federal unsubsidized college loan while they’re in school or in certain other authorized circumstances, the student, not the government, will be responsible for paying all the interest that accrues on an unsubsidized loan during those periods of deferment.

According to the College Board, about 65percent of all undergraduate students in 2009″10 did not accept Stafford loans of any type. The majority of students who did accept Stafford college loans ended up taking out both subsidized and unsubsidized student loans. The average Stafford student loan debt load in 2009″10 was $6,550.

In 2008, Congress authorized increases in the maximum annual and lifetime federal lending limits for Stafford student loans. The expanded loan amounts were approved in part to discourage students from taking on the burden of private student loans, which tend to carry higher interest rates and fewer borrower protections than federal student loans.

Currently, dependent undergraduate students can borrow up to a maximum of $31,000 in Stafford college loans throughout their undergraduate college career. Independent undergraduates, as well as dependent undergraduates whose parents do not qualify for a federal parent loan, can borrow up to a maximum of $57,500 in Stafford college loans.

Graduate students may also be awarded both subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford student loans, up to $20,500 a year and up to a total lifetime maximum of $138,500, including both their undergraduate and graduate Stafford loans.

Graduate students may obtain additional student loan funds through the federal Grad PLUS graduate student loan program. However, whereas Stafford student loans don’t require either a credit check or a co-signer, Grad PLUS loans have modest credit requirements. Even so, the number of graduate loans issued through the Grad PLUS program has steadily increased since Congress introduced the program in 2006″07. About 5percent of all student loans issued in 2009″10 were Grad PLUS graduate student loans.

Parent Loans

In contrast to federal student loans, federal parent loans, known as PLUS loans, are being used less frequently, with 20 percent fewer parent loans issued through the PLUS program in both 2008″09 and 2009″10 than in previous years. The volume of federal parent loans peaked at 11percent in 2004″05 and 2005″06.

Since PLUS loans, unlike Stafford loans, are credit-based loans, one reason for the decline in PLUS loan volume may be that the number of parents who qualify for a PLUS loan has dropped due to the recession. Under current PLUS loan guidelines, parents who are more than 90 days past due on at least one bill or who have declared personal bankruptcy or been subject to a foreclosure proceeding within the last five years do not qualify for parent loans through the PLUS program.

Also, always remember to urge your guests to bring their friends and relatives as well. School Fundraising Events – Tips for Planning and Organizing

Organizing a successful school fundraising event requires great planning and execution. Since there are several jobs and responsibilities involved in organizing a fundraising event, the prime requirement for organizing a fundraiser is to collate a team of enthusiastic volunteers. You can use your school’s notice board or personally invite volunteers for helping in organizing the event. Although a team of 15 to 20 volunteers will be sufficient, the size of the team will depend on the strength of the expected audience.

Once you have the desired team you need to decide the activities you will have to raise funds. When it comes to school fundraisingevents, there are several great fundraising ideas. You can setup small stalls to sell goodies such as funky jewelry, stationery items, eatables, collectibles, sports accessories, memorabilia, and the likes. You can also host a kids’ talent show, and set a minimal ticket fee to further add to the funds. Other shows such as musicals, fashion, and science can also prove to be great fundraising ideas.

After the fundraising ideas are decided, you need to concentrate on promoting the event. You can use different modes of communication such as e-mail, mobile SMS, flyers, etc, to promote the event. Social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, etc may also be of great help in promoting the event. When making the content for the promotion of the event, you should encourage your invitees to invite their friends and relatives as well. Does American Dream Have to Die With Michael Jackson?

–The American Public Must Demand Honest Journalism.–

by Forbes Everett Landis

What does our silence about the attacks on one of the most visible achievers of the American Dream say? Are we not forfeiting our children’s future into the hands of bullies? Is it not time for us to speak up about the damage opportunistic journalism is doing to our culture?

Last year, the news of pop-superstar Michael Jackson’s premature death shocked the world. As I am a classical music fan, not a connoisseur of pop music or any of its stars, Jackson’s death did not immediately evoke any particular emotion in me. I just let it go.

But as the days went by, and as I passively soaked in more and more news reports on Jackson’s death, I began to feel increasingly uncomfortable. A man had passed away: What need was there for the media to so eagerly show humiliating images of how Jackson would have looked on his death-bed? I was prompted to look into the case more thoroughly.

After more than a year, although I am not now nor ever will be a Michael Jackson fan, and despite my sometimes skeptical view of the frenzied remarks often made by Jackson’s hard-core followers, I feel the need to say this:

To keep the American dream alive for our children, we should stop abusing our talented and creative spirits out of jealousy and misunderstanding.

Jackson had to deal with the media condemning him as strange, weird, and even labeling him a freak, both figuratively and literally. My opinion about this is clear: Though at times, to subjective eyes, Jackson might have looked ‘different,’ half of this eccentricity was due to the fact that he was born to be an artist inevitably different from others because of his imaginative and creative nature, and half because he was forced into being so unconventional by a degree of media pressure few, if any, have ever experienced. Being different from others does not equate being harmful to others. As long as one does not violate others’ human rights, one has the right to be him or herself. In a society that prioritizes human rights and freedom, I find no justification for attacks on people who are perceived to be ‘different.’ These kinds of attacks are especially sordid when they involve the spreading of knowingly false rumors for financial gain. After Jackson’s acquittal on alleged child related charges in 2005, several journalists, such as Aphrodite Jones, came forward to confess that most of the media in attendance intentionally put objectivity aside in covering the Michael Jackson case by fragmenting the facts divulged in court, reporting only anti-Jackson information.

*The human race has quite often owed its scientific or artistic progress to the “weird” and the “eccentric.” Let us consider, for example, Galileo Galilei, who was charged for openly discussing Copernican theory, a concept seen as sinful and roundly condemned at that time; later, of course, this theory went on to become the accepted standard of scientific understanding of the universe. We might also stop to consider how treasonable the very idea of democracy once was, how dangerous the aristocracy felt it to be; later, democracy became the world’s prevailing political philosophy. We can also remember that the concept of equality between : women and men, different ethnicities, or diverse religions, was derided when it emerged. Also, had she not thought differently from others, might Mother Teresa not have been a stay-at-home mom instead of traveling to India and risking her life for humanity?

Keeping the history of these exceptional ideas and people in mind, I can almost guarantee that if one had killed all the “weirdoes” among our Australopithecine ancestors 3.5 million years ago, our species might not have made it to the 21st Century. We might very well have just remained a much more primitive species, one without the use of fire and the wheel, let alone an orchestra, democracy, or computers. Is it not, after all, diversity that allows for evolution?

In other words, “weirdness” is sometimes the inevitable result of an exceptional imaginative ability that sees no boundaries in search of all the creative possibilities. As long as such individuals do us no harm, we should let them be. It is our duty to be respectful of those who are different not only because every human being is entitled to freedom, but also because diversity is at the root of human survival.

To those who regard Jackson’s soft voice altered skin tone or facial appearance as weird, I would simply say this: You are revealing your own nature, at best : narrow-minded or obtuse ; at worst – unkind and bigoted. Nobody’s holy scripture deems it acceptable to criticize the physical appearance of people who have contributed so generously to the voiceless.

To those who think that the Jackson’s spoken voice was peculiar, I would say that I see no significance in it. The spoken voice cannot be uncoupled from the singing voice that so many lauded. It might also be helpful for you to consider this information in order to broaden your understanding of the global context: there are countries where people respect those who speak softly, in a calm, non-aggressive manner. The American standard, where a loud voice seems necessary to assertiveness, is not the only standard in the world.

To those who criticize the ‘King of Pop’ for purchasing Neverland, I pose this question: Would you have survived without buying a Neverland-sized residential property if you were in reality never able to explore any place alone without being horded by an ensuing media and public frenzy whenever you stepped out of your front door? A huge residence with a vast garden might have been the only possible way for this worldwide megastar to relax and enjoy some fresh air without constant intrusion from the public. After all, Jackson earned his money though incredible hard work and a perfectionist work-ethic. In light of his Guinness record-making support of no less than 39 charities, it may very well be hypocritical to criticize his spending habits.

Having demonstrated that there is nothing inherently wrong with living unconventionally, the question now turns to whether or not Jackson ever harmed anyone with his behaviors. Here I will discuss the child related allegations leveled against him. —

In discussing the two instances of allegations Jackson was faced with, I would like to focus my attention primarily on the 1993 case due to the fact that the more recent (2003-2005) accusations ended with Jackson receiving a full legal acquittal on all counts, the extremely low credibility of the accuser’s mother playing a significant factor in this exoneration. In other words, Jackson was found not-guilty so I believe we must discount this case.

Considering that the laws of most U.S. states set down one’s right to sue anyone without being counter-sued solely in retribution for one’s lawsuit, this means that one can safely sue anyone they wants to sue. Thus, the extortion of popular and wealthy persons is an increasingly attractive ploy for those seeking a quick buck. Fast and easy money may once have come at a personal price, that being distrust from one’s community. But, with cities growing ever larger and more impersonal, an individual’s local reputation is of gradually thinning importance, resulting in more room for thievery. To some mischief minded, the risk of exposure as an extortionist might thus seem lower when compared to the potentially enormous financial benefits of a scam. As a result, a millionaire, especially one whose professional value is greatly magnified by popularity, is more vulnerable than ever. According to the National Center for Child Abuse and Neglect, in 1998, 71% of the abuse reports were revealed to be false or unfounded. The false accusation rate even rises to over 90% when a custody battle and money is involved (as was the case between the plaintiff’s parents in the 1993 allegations against Jackson, who was a friend of the child’s mother). In the 1993 case, the charges never went to trial but were settled out of court.

The record illustrates that the financially troubled accuser’s father had previously approached Jackson’s representatives with a monetary request well before he sued for the alleged molestation, demonstrating that he would have refrained from filing suit in exchange for money. Would any parent with real care for the well-being of his or her children make such a deal?

As evidence for my position, I present the recorded phone conversation in which the accuser’s father is heard to say that everything [is] going “according to a certain plan,” that he would win “big time” and that Jackson would be ruined forever. These words sounds far more like the words of a mercenary than those of a father concerned with justice for his son.

It should also be emphasized that Jackson was never indicted on the 1993 allegations, even after an intensive 13-month investigation including interviews with over 400 witnesses in and out of the country, extensive searches of his residential properties, and even a 25 minute full-body examination in which Jackson had every part of his body photographed, videotaped and examined. And in the six years before the statute of limitation had expired, no criminal charges were ever filed. After the District Attorney’s office spent millions of tax payer dollars in hot pursuit of the singer, had they found any evidence of molestation, they would have been certain to indict Jackson. Civil settlement does not prevent criminal indictment. The 13-year-old boy at the center of the allegations refused to testify criminally and his father, the main individual behind the allegations, committed suicide within months of Jackson’s death.

Having discussed the mischaracterization of what people might dismiss as “weird,” and having made plain the falsity of the allegations made against Jackson, accusations that in my view look suspiciously extortionate, I would now like to consider the moral impact that Jackson might have had on our society.

Regarding integrity, Jackson’s deeds and lifestyle, apart from the media’s fabricated stories, remained consistently appropriate. In fact, his decency made him look almost old-fashioned, even when he was young, when compared with many entertainers’ indulgences in sex, alcohol, and drugs. Interviews with Jackson indicated that he felt it highly inappropriate to remark publicly on his sexual life. This, as far as I am concerned, is an example of his dignity and modesty. However, this very reserve may ironically have fueled baseless speculation about Jackson’s sexual orientation. I wish to ask : is publicly questioning a person’s sexual life not way more inappropriate than that person’s choice of silence out of a desire for privacy regarding the same? The fact that Jackson was not involved in a multitude of sex scandals with women, a fact which should normally invite respect, seems unfairly to have been justification for the media to pathologize Jackson. It is beyond ridiculous to construct the lack of lasciviousness and scandal as itself scandalous and suspect.

Many people have also remarked that Jackson did not curse at all, especially when he was younger. Only after suffering numerous hate campaigns founded on falsehoods did he insert a very small amount of profanity into his songs, in response to a world which had betrayed him so deeply. Even then, his use of profanity stayed away from vitriolic attacks , but came across more as an artistic expression of deep anguish.

Jackson also faced many accusations regarding his appearance. But, turning this around, what might this suggest about those themselves who so scrutinized the way he looked? What does it say about their own biases ? And about the people who claimed to know details about every surgical procedure Jackson allegedly had, calling him a freak without even having seen him actually ?

After the 2003 allegations, the media repeatedly and mockingly displayed pictures of Jackson in an emaciated state, not out of concern for his well-being, but seemingly simply in order to label him a freak. It may very well be argued that Jackson was indeed beginning to look fairly thin, but doesn’t taking somebody’s tired physical appearance as direct evidence of inner abnormality only reveal our own superficiality ? Maybe , just maybe anyone else would have looked equally fatigued had they suffered the anguish of having to relentlessly fight vicious and false allegations.

On the topic of morality : Which is more admirable, giving people hope by regularly visiting and donating to hospitals and orphanages, or telling scandalous stories based on speculation or lies? Which is more despicable, pursuing an exceptionally rigorous dedication to artistic perfection, or giving in to jealousy and greed to bring down an artist? The tabloid press, of course, uses this strategy on most celebrities and public figures. One might argue that Michael Jackson had learned to use the press as cynically as it used him, that he , especially in the early days, once believed that “all publicity is good, even bad publicity,” because it keeps their names in people’s minds. One might even go so far as to say that Jackson purposely flaunted his eccentricities to generate press. He did, after all, have a fine artistic sense of the dramatic, with drama selling newspapers. And Jackson always managed to keep his fame burning bright, even when he was not producing any new songs. As elaborated below, my issue, however, is not with Jackson’s handling of the media. Rather it is about what the media’s handling of Jackson says about societal norms and ethics.

Critics have accused Jackson of not opposing false information adamantly enough. Pondering that charge, I suspect that having been abused by the media intrusiveness from his early days in the spotlight, Jackson might have come to feel vulnerable and victimized. Having been taught by his parent always to be nice to the media and to his fans, he might have felt he should not defend himself too vigorously for fear of losing his popularity. Furthermore, had Jackson taken the time to fight every rumor thrown his way, he would not have had time to be Michael Jackson, the artist as he did explain to a close friend. In the end ,we must ask ourselves, who is more faithful and true, a person who calls someone a freak without knowing him personally and without possessing any evidence of wrongdoing, or a person who shows patience and courage in the face of hostility and simply expresses who he really is by letting his work speak for itself?

Some might argue that the attacks Jackson had to suffer from the media and from consumers can be justified as a natural price to pay for the fame and fortune. No, I say. That is too high a price being charged from a human being. Those attacks had exceeded all justifiable limits, And I wish to note that he was not paid to endure pain, but for his relentless efforts and dedication to his craft.

We first explored “weirdness” as necessary and beneficial diversity, specifically addressing the fact that Jackson’s physical appearance and spoken pitch seem irrelevant to his achievements. We then found that allegations of unethical behavior on Jackson’s part were in truth baseless. Then we analyzed Jackson’s non-aggressive stance during TV interviews, not as demonstration of guilt but as a sign of decorum. Lastly, we found that the cost of fame seems an insufficient justification for the extraordinary personal attacks Jackson went through.

We will now consider the implications of the behavior of the media and the public during the course of Michael Jackson’s career. The American media have disgraced themselves by displaying to the world the schoolyard bullying of a talented and creative soul with great philanthropic achievements . Now consider how this public bullying of a legendary figure might present itself to a new generation of youth, how it might play out in their minds and affect their morale … Might this type of public bullying not discourage the youngsters of today from pursuing their own creativity, their own inner diversity, for fear that they themselves might incur such abuse ?

The coverage of Michael Jackson’s life poses among others, these questions to America: Does fulfilling the American Dream require that one subject oneself to unending media intrusion, to lies about oneself for the sake of selling newspapers, and where one unproven accusation is enough to be convicted in the court of national opinion ? Do you want your children to live in a world where pursuing the American Dream involves the risks of a nightmare of mistrust and abuse?

I refer again to the journalists who later admitted their purposely distorted biased reporting on the Michael Jackson child molestation cases. If we recall for a moment the enormous number of journalists who surrounded the Santa Barbara County courthouse, one can surmise that the handful of journalists who came clean about their deception make up only the tip of the iceberg.I suspect that there were hundreds more who remained silent and who knowingly bent the truth to sell papers.

I also suppose that there are thousands of people who, having received one-sided information, once believed Jackson to be a freakish criminal, but who, after his death and the revelation of new information, have come to see him just as one of us, a burdened human being and a caring parent, as well as a uniquely talented artist and a devoted philanthropist. Perhaps these now better-informed members of the public have come to doubt the veracity of the media itself, not just when it comes to Michael Jackson, but in general.

I speculate that there is a pervasive notion that it is safer to say nothing when it comes to Michael Jackson for fear of being promptly stigmatized. However, we need to address the implications of such silent behavior. What does our silence about the attacks on one of the most visible achievers of the American Dream say? If we play it safe, we are forfeiting our children’s future into the hands of bullies. It is time for us to speak up about the damage opportunistic journalism is doing to our culture. As Edmund Burke once penned, “all it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”

Organizing a Fundraiser

Organizing a fund raising event is often misconstrued to be a rather simple; however, this is not the case. A lot of planning and efforts are required to organize a successful fundraiser. There are a number of tasks that need to be performed when organizing one such event; this is the reason it is advisable to keep a written record of all the completed and pending tasks. To kick-start your preparations, first you need to find proficient enthusiastic volunteers as organizing a fundraiser alone will be way too difficult for anyone.

You should divide the volunteers into teams, giving each team different responsibility. The first team you need to make is the promotions team. This team will be responsible for promoting the event. You can choose different modes of communication to promote the event. Some of the most favorable modes of communication to promote a fundraiser include social media, e-mails, posters, flyers, post-cards, etc. Ask all the volunteers to invite all their personal and professional contacts to the event. Make sure that the cause of the fundraiser is clearly mentioned in all your contacts.

Once the promotion part is completed, you will have to think of some good fund raising ideas to generate funds. You can host different types of competitions and shows, and set a reasonable entry fee for the event. Furthermore, you can set up stalls of different types of goodies such eatables, games, fashion accessories, apparel, handicrafts, etc. You should also have a donation box for those who would want to voluntarily donate for the cause. Always try to decorate the place in a way that it should express the cause for the event.

If you find it difficult to organize the event all by your own, you can take assistance of a fund raising agency. These agencies specialize in organizing fundraisers for all possible reason and can be of great help to you. These agencies offer a wide range of sellable goods that can significantly increase the amount raised. You can use the internet to find the list of all such agencies.

Homeschooling | The Areas Of Focus In Homeschooling Programs

Many parents seem worried about their children, as they fear that they are not doing enough for their growth. Many parents do not find joy in the homeschooling experience, as they are tied to the cultural models of education defined by textbooks, classrooms, workbooks, testing and grading and the age-old norms.

Textbooks and formal curriculum are simply artificial means of education, as they hold back the children from expressing themselves. Formal school education creates the impression that children gain maximum knowledge through conventional modes of education. Conventional education actually dilutes the joy for learning of the child and thus turns education into a tedious and boring task.

Children love to read and being read to and they learn through their own understanding and ideas and also through real life. They love exploring new things and learning on their own. Homeschooling mainly consists of five areas of studies.

. Discipleship- In this area, we start by studying the words of God to gain wisdom. We must inculcate love towards God and ensure that the knowledge of his words is embedded in the heart of the child.

. Disciplined- The basics such as math and language and art are taught, as the children learn foundational learning skills and competencies.

. Discussion- We usually devote a lot of our time to reading history and literature to our children. We should nourish the mind of the child with the best in living schools and also fine arts.

. Discovery- We should always direct our children towards natural learning, such as studying nature, science, creative art and all their personal preferences among the subjects offered. The basic goal of a parent should be to stimulate the child towards creating opportunities for creativity, curiosity and discovery.

. Optional studies- We should ensure the development of the child according to his preferences and ability, by focusing on his natural aptitude and life skills and community development.

A home should be a place of warmth, where children learn freely and naturally, as they play. Education is the natural outgrowth of the discipleship relation between children and their parents. This is what a home centered learning model tries to capture.

Great deal of freedom is achieved by knowing that what you do adjusts to a pattern that is already existent. Nature designs children to be receptive to learning and has designed the home to provide that learning environment .In the same way, nature designs parents as guides. Freedom and joy flows naturally when we follow and cooperate with nature.

There should be no distinction between home and schools. We should learn to live and learn simultaneously. This should be the environment in every home.

Most parents forget that the very essence of learning is based on what they grasp and what the requirement. Many parents force children to learn what they want them to and then they think that they are providing their children with the best education. In this way, the children end up miserable, being forced to live up to the expectations of their parents.

Bringing up a Daughter! Islamic Perspective and Muslim Societies

Bringing up a Daughter!

Islamic Perspective and Muslim Societies

Azher Hameed Qamar (2010)

Published in; PSYKOLOGISK TIDSSKRIFT, 13 March, 2010

Psykologisk Institute, SVT-fakultetet, NTNU, Trondheim, Norway

Islam is known as an educational, social revolution in Arab that brought about lot of changes to eliminate all type of discrimination and to promote human rights on the basis of equality and equity. But, unfortunately, today there are certain traditional and cultural practices in different Muslim societies, which deprive women of certain rights that are granted by Islam. This discrimination starts even before the birth of a child (e.g abortion in case if the expected child is a girl) and continues throughout the child rearing and afterward. Education, inheritance, freedom of choice and opinion, standard of modesty and tolerance are so much gender based that even a mother desire to have male children for a respectable status in the family. This article will briefly look into some important Islamic perspectives about bringing up a baby-girl into a woman, which are missing in many Muslim societies due to lack of knowledge or lack of sincere intention.

___________________________________________________________________________________

A ‘Child’, who needs to be protected and nurtured by the elders of the society, is vulnerable because of being an easy victim of discrimination on cultural, social, and religious or gender based prejudices. Thus, child-rearing practices raise a baby girl into a woman that is desired by the family or the culture. Most of the gender-based issues are followed in the name of religion. And more than 80% of the world population is practicing some religion or faith. More than half of the world is following Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) and Islam is the second largest religion in the world.1

Gender-based discrimination in many Muslim countries is not Islamic, as it is referred, but it has its roots in cultural and family traditions, or even for certain reasons that include greed for property inheritance, and male-domination. Following are some of the perceptions that can be seen in practice today. 2

Discrimination on the basis of physical and mental strengths.
Discrimination on the basis of social and economical status.
A female child should be trained to serve the male members of the family because an ideal wife is the one, whose love is selfless like mother and whose service is dedicated like daughter (this concept goes for an ideal daughter and an ideal mother as well).
A female child should learn the submission of her own will. This is the role she has to play towards her parents when unmarried and to her husband when married.
The real home of a daughter is her husband’s home and she is supposed to leave her parents, brothers and sisters one day.

Before looking into the status of female child in Muslim families, first we have to see what Islam says about bringing up a daughter.

Islam, A Brief Introduction

Islam is based on revelations received by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the 7th century, which were later recorded in the Qur’an, Islam’s sacred text. Quran is the main source of knowledge that is protected by God Almighty Himself.

“No falsehood could enter it (Quran), in the past or in the future; a revelation from a Most Wise, Praiseworthy.” (Al-Quran, 41:42)

And Sunnah is the second important source of knowledge. Sunnah is described in Sahi-Ahadiths (Arabic for “narratives” or “reports”, a record of the words and deeds of the Prophet).

Being specific to the topic, the following concepts in Islam are important to know.

Non-discrimination in Islam

Pre-Islamic discrimination in Arabia were not limited to Arab or Non-Arab, but also dominated in their whole social life. Sons were preferred on daughters. Burying infant daughters alive was not a crime, rather a traditional act. Birth of a daughter was taken as a curse. Women were deprived of all rights and were no more than slaves, an easy victim of exploitation (Shah, 2006). Islam brought a revolutionary change and abolished all types of discrimination. All men and women are offspring of Adam and Eve, and born with equal religious, social, political, moral rights to spend a free life. Superiority among them is only based on piety and good deeds.3

“O mankind, We have created you from male and female; and We have divided you into tribes and sub-tribes for greater facility of communication. Verily, the most honored among you in the sight of Allah is he who is the most righteous among you. Surely, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.” (Al-Quran, 49:14)

Men and women share the same spiritual nature. They both have the honor to be the trustees of Allah on earth. They are equal in practicing social, moral, economical, and political rights sharing the concerned responsibilities. They are responsible for their good or bad deeds individually and will get equal reward in return. Most pious and virtuous is most loved by Allah (Badawi, 1995). There are many verses in the Quran that declare non-discrimination between genders in whichever aspect.4

Sanctity of life, before and after Birth

“Whosoever has spared the life of a soul, it is as though he has spared the life of all people. Whosoever has killed a soul, it is as though he has murdered all of mankind.” (Al-Quran, 5:32)

The life of every soul is sacred, thus abortion is also forbidden, whether it is due to poverty or gender discrimination. Quran called them as losers who killed children foolishly.5 According to most of the Islamic Scholars, life begins at conception and an embryo deserves respect and protection at all stages of the pregnancy. Anyhow, exception is the case, when the life of mother, foetus, or both is in danger, or there is risk of severe foetal deformity.6

‘A Child’ in Islam

There is no numerical age definition of a child in Islam. A child is considered a child till it reaches puberty and maturity. According to the Covenant on the Rights of the Child in Islam (2004, article 1),

“A child means every human being who, according to the law applicable to him/her, has not attained maturity.” 7

A child is born innocent, without sins and he/she is loving and the most miraculous creation of Allah. The birth of a child should be celebrated. A daughter is a blessing upon parents. At the time of birth, celebration for the new born, reciting Adhan (call for prayer), giving him/her a good meaningful name, giving aqeeqah (sacrifice of goat/s in the name of Allah), circumcision of the male child are the birth rituals in Islam. Breast-feeding the newborn is an obligatory right of every child. 8

Islamic Family System and Parent-Child Relationship

Article 5 of Cairo Declaration on Human Rights in Islam (1990) states the importance of family and marriage in Islam in the following words;

“The family is the foundation of society and marriage is the basis of its formation. Men and women have the right to marriage, and no restrictions stemming from race, color or nationality shall prevent them from enjoying this right.”

Moreover, it is also stated that the Islamic state is responsible to remove all obstacles to marriage, family and welfare.9 Islamic family system assures the rights of parents, children, husband, wife and other relatives with selfless and loving behavior to each other. In fact the family is also the basic unit of Islamic Society (Khan, 2003). Family is a source of joy, love and contentment.10 Family is an institution for socialization of children by providing education, training, and socio-economical protection. Both genders play their role according to the status they have in the family. Quran and Sunnah are the source of guidance to perform their said role in the best interest of family. Islam lays special emphasis on parent-child relationship and specifies rights and duties to provide a firm foundation for an Islamic Family System.

Parent’s Rights and Children’s Obligations

Parents must be respected and obeyed. There is no concept of ‘old houses’ in Islam. Children are responsible to take care of their parents when they get old.

“Your Lord has commanded that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to your parents. If one of them or both of them reach old age with you, do not say to them a word of disrespect, or scold them, but say a generous word to them. And act humbly to them in mercy, and say, “My Lord, have mercy on them, since they cared for me when I was small.” (Al-Quran, 17:23-24)

Even after death of parents, children should do kindness to them. To do kindness to parents after their death, Prophet advised to invoke blessings on them, forgiveness for them, carry out their final instructions after their death, join ties of relationship which are dependent on them, and honour their friends. (Sunan Abu-Dawud, 40:5143; Sahi Muslim, 45:6513-15) 11

Dignity of a ‘Mother’

“And We have enjoined man in respect of his parents– his mother bears him with faintings upon faintings and his weaning takes two years– saying: Be grateful to Me and to both your parents; to Me is the eventual coming.” (Al-Quran, 31:14).

Mother suffers far more sufferings than a father in bringing up the children. Her sufferings start long before the birth of the child. Pregnancy, childbirth, nursing and rearing are the spiritual acts for a Muslim mother. Therefore, mothers are placed in the highest esteem among all relations in the family (Schleifer, 2007). According to a famous saying of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), paradise lies beneath the feet of mothers. A person asked Prophet Muhammad about the most worthy of his kindness among his relatives. The Prophet replied: “Your mother, again your mother, again your mother, then your father, then your nearest relatives according to the order (of nearness).” (Sahi Bukhari, 78:5971; Sahi Muslim, 45:6500) 12

Children have obligations of respect, honor, obedience, kindness, service, and care to their parents. The failure to perform these obligations is a big sin. Even if parents are not Muslims, they have these rights to be honored by the children. Parents can be disobeyed only if they ask something that violates Allah’s Commands.

Children Rights and Parent’s Obligations

Bringing up children well and without any discrimination is the main obligation of parents. It further includes all those rights that are comprised of provision, protection and participation rights. The details of these rights have been mentioned in Covenant of The Rights of The Child in Islam (2004) and almost all rights confirm United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). 13

In Islamic context, father is responsible for food, clothing, accommodation and all other needs of the family. To fulfill these needs, he must not be discriminate among his children for any reason. Mother has an important role of child rearing because she spends most of her time with the children and thus also have the responsibility to educate and train them according to Islamic beliefs and values. Family is the first and foremost social and legal responsibility of a man, also associated with great virtue. 14

Children should be loved and parents must spend their time with them, playing, chatting and having fun. It is exact Islam to be kind to children and teach them with love (Hussain, 2004). Love and kindness for children is a mercy from Allah that He puts in our hearts. 15

All rights about children and liabilities are practiced on the basis of Islamic moral and social system, consequently, forming a society free of social, economical, and sexual exploitation of the children. Summing up, a child must be loved, cared, educated and brought up into a confident, wise enough adult who may spend a free prosperous, peaceful and (morally and physically) healthy life according to Islam. 16

Birth of a Daughter – A Blessing

Before Islam, Arabs were used to kill their daughters and the birth of a girl was considered as a curse. It was a tradition to bury the newborn baby-girl alive.

“When news is brought to one of them, of (the birth of) a female (child), his face darkens, and he is filled with inward grief! With shame does he hide himself from his people, because of the bad news he has had! Shall he retain it on (sufferance and) contempt, or bury it in the dust? Ah! What an evil (choice) they decide on?” (Al-Quran, 16:58-59)

Islam rejected all these cruel attitudes and regarded the birth of a girl as a blessing from God Almighty. Quran condemns the cruel act of killing girls and holds the doers answerable for their sinful deed.

“And when the female infant buried alive is asked. For what sin she was killed.”

(Al-Quran, 81:8-9)

And the Prophet said “Allah has forbidden you (1) to be undutiful to your mothers (2) to withhold (what you should give) or (3) demand (what you do not deserve), and (4) to bury your daughters alive.” (Sahi Bukhari, 78:5975) 17

Hussain (2004, p. 262), quotes a hadith from Tabarani that shows how the parent are blessed on the birth of a daughter and Allah extends His succor to him who will look after her and bring up her.

Bringing up a Female Child

Children are a gift from God Almighty and God Almighty doesn’t discriminate between the two genders. Therefore, in Islam, there is no distinction of bringing up a boy or a girl and the Covenant of The Rights of The Child in Islam (2004), is valid for both genders. That’s the reason verses of Quran and the prophet’s saying regarding children rights, include rights of provision, protection and participation without discrimination. A female child enjoys personal freedom, individual identity, inheritance, freedom of choice and right to health and education. Like boys, girls should also be brought up and trained with pleasure and religious satisfaction. According to many Ahadiths; parents who brought up their daughters in a good way, treat them with love, feed them, educate them, and arrange a good marriage for them, they deserve paradise. Same advice is also for brothers towards their sisters. 18

Participation Rights

Likewise all other rights on equality basis, girls do have the right to participate in social, political, and religious activities. There are numbers of examples from Islamic history, where Muslim women took part in political, educational, social, and administrative affairs. They had been subject specialists, scholars, teachers, poetess, lawyers, judge, doctors, soldiers, and administrators (Qadri, 2009, p. 108-114). For financial activities, they are advised not to engage themselves if they don’t have any financial problems. But if the husband or father are not earning enough to meet the needs of the family, they can support them taking part in financial activities.

Inheritance

A girl shares the inheritance from her father and husband. Though she gets the one half as compared to the inheritance of a son19 but she also inherits from husband and enjoys the freedom to use her inheritance according to her own wish, since she does not have any financial liability. Moreover, son is responsible for old parents, sisters, wife and kids whereas daughter has no financial responsibility before or after marriage. Before marriage, father and brothers are responsible for her needs and after marriage husband is responsible. The misconception that ‘Islam prefers men on women’ is a misunderstanding of the Quranic verse that says:

“Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allâh has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend (to support them) from their means.” (Al-Quran, 4:34).

This verse says about the responsibility that a man has more than a woman, and not the superiority. Islam emphasizes on equality but with equity because “Equality might be misunderstood to mean absolute equality rather overall equality” (Abidin, 2007, p. 84).

Marriage

The minimum age for marriage is ‘when a boy or girl is not a child’ and the definition of child has been described earlier. Marriage is a spiritual, moral and social union of two persons on equality of rights to each other and as partners in life through thick and thin. An Islamic marriage takes place only if 20

Both the groom and the bride are agreed in the presence of witnesses
Husband is religiously bound to pay ‘Mahr’ (obligatory bridal money) to the wife that cannot be taken back in any case.

Any forced marriage will be cancelled according to Islamic laws. There are examples in Islamic history when the forced marriages were declared null and void.21 Islam does not consider any woman to be the possession of any man. The Quran describes this as a sacred, loving and calm relation between two genders.22

A Glimpse into Muslim Societies Today

Due to concision requirements of the article, it is not possible to describe all societies and all types of discrimination. Therefore, I will discuss some of the important issues of gender-based discrimination in the Sub-Continent (Pakistan, India, Bangladesh). I think, the number of Islamic religious organizations (belonging to different school of thoughts and on different level or priorities) in the Sub-Continent is more than in any other Muslim country. Following are some of the issues, that I have also observed, which highly violate the women rights as granted by Islam.

Desire for a Son

A mother, who is giving birth to daughters, is a victim of emotional and psychological torture by the family and community as well. Her food and health requirements are neglected during and after pregnancy. Whereas, a mother giving birth to a son, is a special one, cared and looked after in the best possible way. Consequently, reinforced by this, a woman desire for a son (Violation of right to life, health, survival, development).

Right to Education

So far the right to education is concerned, situation is getting better for last few years, but still not up to the mark. Girls’ education is not considered as important as that of boys because:

They are not supposed to do jobs like boys.
They are not supposed to get the freedom of opinion that education can give them.
Even religious education is limited to offering prayer, reciting Quran, and acting upon some basic beliefs. That’s the reason women are also not well aware of their rights in Islam.
The male elders can lose ‘control’ on educated girls.

Freedom of Choice for Marriage

A girl is not supposed to go against the decisions of the family elders about her marriage. Her freedom to choice for her mate is considered immoral. A refusal of parent’s choice might result into severe treatment towards her. She might be tortured psychology and emotionally, or physically. Such cases have also been reported where the girl’s life is at risk, who tries to choose her mate herself. Honor-killings are also one of the aspects of this serious issue. Child marriages, exchange marriages, marrying girls as ransom for murder, using girls for tribal disputes etc are the issues directly violating women rights to life, physical safety, psychological peace, and freedom of choice according to Islam.

Right to Inheritance

To deprive the girls of property inheritance, totally or partially is also a major issue. This is also a reason why the girls are not allowed to choose their mates. Even, culturally it is considered a good action if the sisters ‘gift’ their inheritance to brothers. ‘Marriage with Quran’ (to cover the head of the girl with Quran and teach her the Holy Quran, to remain unmarried afterwards) is also an ‘Against Islam’ act that is done to deprive the girl of inheritance.

Conclusion

These are some of the serious issues, which as a whole violate many important rights granted by Islam and other human right conventions. Islam is very clear about status of woman in a Muslim society on the basis of equality and equity. Unfortunately, there are many human rights activist and organization, who promote their campaign ignoring the Islamic perspectives or rather opposing Islam according to their limited knowledge. I suggest that they must study Islam in a more optimistic way ignoring or arguing those so-called Muslim scholars who presents Islam according to the cultural or traditional needs. I am sure, when common people will get a clear picture of Islam, they will be motivated to honor status of a woman in a Muslim society. And for sure, child-rearing practices will also be influenced optimistically.
